Save HMAS Penguin Public Meeting 21 May 2026

The campaign to protect HMAS Penguin and the Angophora forest received an enormous show of community support at the public meeting held with the Headland Preservation group. 

Around 500 people attended, with many turned away after the Mosman Club venue reached capacity. 

Speakers included community leaders, Senators David Shoebridge and Jess Collins, Major General Gus McLachlan (Ret’d), and artist and former Sydney Harbour Federation Trust executive Nick Hollo.

Mosman Parks & Bushland Association 1964-2004

In 1964 a road was bulldozed across a park and that was the beginning of advocacy for public land by the Mosman Parks & Bushland Association first known as the Ashton Park Association. At the same time the idea of bush regeneration was being born. This video is a history of the first 40 years


The Battle for Sydney Harbour 1998

The Battle for Sydney Harbour 1998. The story of how Sydney Harbour foreshore defence lands were saved from private development eventually to become the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. These lands, including Headland Park, Middle Head, Chowder Bay, North Head, Cockatoo Island, Woolwich Dock and Platypus, are now protected by an Act of Parliament. Saving Mosman Bushland in August 1988

In August 1988 the Commonwealth announced a proposal to sell off, for development, the area of bush land and trees between what is now the walkway down to Balmoral from the extension of Middle Head Road, and the hospital at HMAS Penguin. There was a big protest at Balmoral, speakers included Tom Uren and Barry O'keefe, Mosman Parks and Bushland member and the then Mayor of Mosman.
